Aureus (Exoplanet) was named by the first human explorers to land on its surface. Like Earth it has a single natural satellite, or moon, called Eleanor.
According to the captain's log it was winter on the exoplanet's main continent when they chose to land and, as they made their descent, they realized they were just in time for golden hour. This natural phenomenon made the landscape and white-gold sky turn the view into "a breathtaking gold foil painting" according to all members of the expedition who were present. History says, and audio logs confirm, it was this first impression of the surface that inspired them to name the exoplanet Aureus, which means "golden" in latin.
Controversy: Despite the official documentation some still claim the name precedes the expedition and the exoplanet was named Aureus after the company's desire to exploit the gold reservoirs that had been confirmed to exist previous to landing. Though no record of such a thing has been found, it is true that the first expeditions seeked to exploit the exoplanet's large mineral supplies, which has kept the rumor alive over the years.
Since Eleanor was not named until after humans had settled on the planet, it's often referred to by locals as "our moon" to distinguish it from The Moon (Earth's).
Aureus has four continents, including its arctic regions on each pole.
"The Main Continent", as its name implies, is the biggest continent of Aureus - as well as where most of its population and industry resides. It's divided in three regions or areas; the bigger one is named Erasmus, on the east; while the other two, smaller in size, are Charis and Emeritus on the west.
There's a fourth region in Aureus named Chrysos which encompases all of "The Old Continent", a large portion of land that used to be part of the Main Continent millenia ago, where most mining operations take place.
The Coalition of Rightful Aurean Leaders - also known simply as The Coalition, tCoRAL or CoRAL - is a group of individuals who have been elected to rule over Aureus and take decisions regarding interplanetary relations and planetary laws.
They are well known for being more just and level-headed than the former Coalition, which was more focused on personal gain and signing exploitative contracts with Earth.
The Old Coalition or The Earth Appointed Coalition, tEAC for short, was displaced by tCoRAL many years ago when the planet and its people decided to emancipate from Earth; most of its members have fled the planet since or were put on political trial for the misuse of planetary resources, some of them were even exiled.
Integrated Medical Mechanical Solutions (IMMS), formerly Integrated Mechanical Solutions (IMS), is a company that used to manufacture robots, specifically technical-mechanics, and later took over the business of synthetic healthcare all over the planet.
IMMS' goal is to make sure that the synthetic population of the planet is healthy - taken care of, up to date, and not suffering from major malfunctions that'd threaten their life (and ability to work) or anomalous software failures that could spread through the network, etc. Since robots are sentient and must go to them willingly, IMMS offers most of its services for free. However, these services are often free under the condition that whoever needs them is registered in its database.
Humans with augmentations and prosthetics can attend IMMS clinics to get check ups and medical services but not all IMMS clinics have human specialists.
The Overseer Project was [IMS/IMMS] child-project and spawned from the minds of the head researchers of The True Artificial Intelligence Project (Earth). It was supposed to be the next step in Artificial Intelligence and was developed at a time in which synthetic life seemed to be finding its place in society - not long after it started awakening.
The project was eventually terminated after some ethical concerns from IMMS' life quality board and feedback from subjects who were "upgraded".
Mercenary: one that serves merely for wages.
The Mercenaries' Guild came to be thanks to the group effort of several robots whose main original functions were related to warfare and/or security. Since its conception it has worked alongside The Coalition to make sure that the planet is kept safe and its populated areas are protected from danger.
Members of The Mercenaries' Guild must follow the Guild's code and may participate in bounty hunting, community watch programs and other activities that are dangerous in nature. They are well known for answering to the call of the cities of the Main Continent when tensions are high between them.
As per their code, they might work for opposite powers but if pressed to fight one against another they must make sure that their chances of winning are equal. Another part of the code implies members may fight one another to death only if they do so outside populated areas.
According to Bull, The Minotaur Of Ismat, humans are less likely to join the Guild due to their "squishy nature" but those who do will become legend among their kind.
Scavenger: an organism that typically feeds on refuse or carrion.
For myriad reasons Aureus is littered with technological remains of all eras, especially in abandoned settlement areas where Earth-companies left all their machinery and materials to rust and rot. Scavengers have, since the very beginning, made it their job to repair, reuse, recycle, trade and/or resell said remains.
While not all scavenger groups have the same code most of them are allied and gather once in a while to exchange information. To be a part of The Alliance, scavengers must bow to respect all sentient life and never take components from a living human or synthetic being.
The Association is a group of robots who seek to displace humans from positions of power in Eirene (and maybe one day, Aureus).
It is led by two elder former bodyless AIs, Ananke Argyris and Ares Van Der Aart, who recruited all four robots ranked directly below them. While not the only group in Eirene trying to bring about change and avenge the injustices of the past, The Association holds power and inspires fear and respect thanks to its leaders' pasts and influences; at least, to those who know... Ananke and Ares make it their business to keep The Association hidden from the general public.
